Are You Going To Heaven?

Ask the average person on the street if they think they will go to heaven when they die, most would likely answer “Yes!” or “I hope so!” If you were to then follow with “Can you tell me how to get there?”, you probably wouldn’t get two answers that would be exactly the same. Truth be told, although many people hold to some formal church doctrine of belief, their real hope of going to heaven rests in vast combinations of personal thoughts and ideas. People want their own opinions to matter, but when it comes to the most important thing that everyone will  face, do we really want to put our faith in our opinions?

One day Jesus was talking with his disciples and informed them he was going to leave and go to his Father’s house. In other words…he was going to HEAVEN. Knowing they would be discouraged about this, Jesus told them not to be troubled, he was going there to prepare a place for them also! But questions arose from his followers. How could they know the way to get where he would be? How would they get to heaven too? Jesus responds with the plain and simple truth. “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6)

Did I say “plain and simple”? Well, it was from Jesus’ point of view and I don’t think he was trying to hide anything from the disciples or for that matter, us. I’ve often pointed out how Jesus is “the Word of God” in the flesh. And if no one can get to the Father (ie. heaven) except through Jesus, who is the Word of God, what then are the implications? Just this.

It’s the Word that shows…“the way”. The way to God is ONLY found in the Bible.
It’s the Word that reveals…“the truth”. The truth about God is ONLY found in the Bible.
It’s the Word that holds the key to…“the life”.  The life God wants us to live is ONLY found in the Bible.

That may seem too simplistic for those who have been Christians for a long time, but what I have just said is only the beginning. Seeking out the way, the truth and the life, is a process that is to continue each and every day. The crucial thing is to understand what the source is. God has promised he will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5), and that promise has been forever established in his Word (Psalm 119:89). We may turn away or forsake him, but he will always be there for us. So never forget, he IS “the way and the truth and the life.” And that’s NOT just an opinion.
